SignOn is a site where anyone can create an online petition and run a campaign to make a difference on an issue you care about. After you create a petition on SignOn, you'll have access to tech tools that let you stay in touch and organize together with your petition's signers.
Click "Create Petition" here or at the top of this page to get started.
Here's a list of links to a series of "how to" documents to help you get started:
SignOn.org provides tools that help you promote your petition and collect signatures. Some of the fastest growing petitions may also be featured on SignOn.org's homepage, and occasionally MoveOn.org will promote petitions by sending email alerts to MoveOn members in your area.
You should deliver it yourself! Petition targets are most likely to respond when real people deliver the petition in person. So your best bet is to print out the petition after you've collected enough signatures to make an impact and deliver it in person, and if your petition is large enough, you may even be able to get media attention when it is delivered. If your petition is targeted at President Obama and/or the entire U.S. Congress, consider delivering your petition in person to your local U.S. representative and/or U.S. Senators at their district offices. If your petition is targeted at your entire state legislature, consider delivering your petition in person to your local state representatives. Alternatively, you can email your petition signers and ask them to help you deliver the petition in person.
SignOn.org does deliver constituent signatures by email to the President, governors, Congress, and state legislators if auto-delivery is set to "on." SignOn.org delivers signatures to custom targets (i.e. targets you enter manually such as CEOs, local officials, etc.) only if a valid email address is provided. By default, auto-delivery is automatically set to "on," but you may turn this feature off at any time.
To download a PDF of your petition to print and deliver, go to SignOn.org and log in using your email and password. Then go to your Dashboard and click "Print." You will then have the option of either printing your entire petition in one document or splitting your petition into multiple documents sorted by state or simply broken into smaller chunks to make large files more manageable. Choose one option, then click "Download Petition." SignOn will then send you an email with a link to download your petitions. If you do not receive this email within a few minutes, contact help (at) signon.org. You can print your petition as many times as you like--printing will not deactivate your petition.
Yes! We encourage you to contact the signers of your petition. Just log into your dashboard and scroll down the page and click create an email. You can email all of your signers at one time or segment them by state, legislative district or date. For privacy reasons we do not provide a list of email addresses, however, you may email your signers as often as is needed.
SignOn assigns every petition a goal of 50 signatures to begin and then automatically increases the goal each time a signature goal has been reached. Currently, SignOn.org does not allow individual petition-creators to set their own goals for petition signatures.
Some of the most effective campaigns in recent years have started as simple Internet petitions. In fact, MoveOn.org, the sponsor of SignOn.org, began as a petition started by founders Wes Boyd and Joan Blades during the Monica Lewinsky scandal calling on Congress to censure President Clinton and "move on." That said, most effective campaigns require an ongoing variety of tactics, which is why SignOn.org allows petition-creators to email to signers with regular campaign updates and action alerts.
That is completely up you to decide! We will not take down your petition as long as you are still getting signatures. We suggest setting a goal and a deadline and then delivering your petitions when you meet your goal.
SignOn.org does not endorse the content of any campaign on our site, and we don't remove petitions simply because we disagree with them. However, petitions that contain prohibited content can be removed at our discretion, and we encourage you to flag them for removal. Petitions may be deleted from SignOn if they include:
To report a petition, use the "Flag this petition as inappropriate" link on the top right of the page. Petitions that are flagged by multiple members will be reviewed to ensure they do not violate terms of service.
After signing a petition, you may receive emails from your petition's creator through our online system. (Don't worry, your actual email address is kept private from the petition creator.) You'll also receive updates from SignOn's sponsor, MoveOn.org. You can unsubscribe from all emails at any time, and we never sell or share your email address with outside parties.
We use a combination of automated filters, human reviewers, and monitoring of user complaints to prevent spam. If you've received an email from SignOn with any commercial content, or you're just receiving too much email about a legitimate petition, please click the "Unsubscribe" link in your email. You'll get a chance to report the problem to us, and you won't receive more email from that person.
Each email from SignOn and MoveOn includes an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom that you can use to stop receiving future emails.
SignOn.org is sponsored by MoveOn.org Civic Action, but MoveOn.org does not endorse the content of petitions posted on the site.
To find your petition, you need to log into SignOn.org using your email and password. If you can't remember your password, you can request a new password. Then go to your dashboard.
You can always email specific questions about using SignOn or your campaign to signon (at) moveon.org. We'll respond as quickly as possible.
